Internal data and tools are confidential: this page describes the approach only.

1- Overview

In the Cash Management for Financial Institutions team, I automated the processing of MT-191 billing data, a recurring task that was done manually. I gathered the requirements from non-technical business users and built a custom VBA tool to extract, transform and visualize the data.

  • Role: Data Analyst intern
  • Period: August 2024 – January 2025
  • Stack: VBA, Excel
  • Result: processing time reduced from 2 hours to 3 minutes

2- Context

MT-191 is a SWIFT message used between banks to claim charges, interest and other expenses. The team had to process these billing messages and turn them into usable tables and reports, which took about two hours of manual work each time.

[TO COMPLETE: how often the task ran (daily, weekly, monthly), and the volume of messages]

3- What I Did

  1. Requirements: interviewed the business users to understand their process, inputs and expected outputs.
  2. Extraction & transformation: wrote a VBA tool that reads the raw billing data and converts it into clean tabular data.
  3. Visualization: built an automated dashboard so users get the result directly, without manual handling.
  4. Handover: [TO COMPLETE: documentation or training given to users, if any]

4- Results

  • Processing time cut from 2 hours to 3 minutes.
  • [TO COMPLETE: any other impact, e.g. fewer errors, time saved per month]

5- Also during this internship

I took part in answering USD Clearing requests for proposals (RFPs) alongside the account executive.

6- Takeaways

The hardest part was not the code but understanding the business need precisely and designing a tool that non-technical users would actually adopt.
